Cole Organizing Living Things Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
cell The basic unit that makes up living things.
organism Any living thing that can carry out life processes on its own.
reproduce to make more living things of one's own kind.
organ A special part of an organism's body that performs a specific function.
organ system A group of organs that work together to carry out life processes.
life cycle A series of stages that occur during the lifetimes of all organisms.
embryo A plant or animal in the earliest stages of development.
germinate The process in which a seed begins to grow into a new plant.
life span The length of time it takes for an individual organism to complete its life cycle.
metamorphosis The process in which some organisms change form in different stages of their life cycle.
trait A feature or characteristic of a living thing.
inherit To receive traits from parents.
behavior The way that an organism acts or responds to its environment.
environment Everything that surrounds and affects a living thing.
external stimulus Anything in an organism's environment that causes it to react.
internal stimulus Anything within an organism that causes it to react.
inherited behavior A behavior that an organism is born with and does not need to learn.
instinct A complex pattern of behavior that organisms of the same type are born with.
learned behavior A behavior that is taught or learned from experience.
response A reaction to a stimulus.
stimulus Anything that causes a living thing to react.
