Biology - cell cycle

TermDefinition
Mitosis A type of cell division that results in 2 similar daughter cells
Daughter Cell One of the 2 cells formed from a cell that has undergone cell division
Meiosis A type of cell division that results in 4 daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes as the parent
Chromatin Material in which chromosomes are composed of
Chromatid 2 threadlike strands in which chromosomes divide during cell division
Sister Chromatids One half of the duplicated chromosome
Chromosomes A threadlike structure found in the nucleus carrying genetic material
Homologous Chromosomes Chromosome pairs, one from each parent
Genes A unit of heredity that is transferred from a perent to an offspring
Karyotype The number and visual appearance of the chromosomes of a cell
Centrioles Cylindrical organelles involved in the development of spindle fibers
Centromere A region of the chromosome where the microtubules attach
Centrosome An area near the nucleus from which the spindle fibers attach during cell division
Aster A star shaped structure formed during the division of a nucleus in an animal cell
Spindle Fiber All spindles which connect to the centrosome of the cell
Kinetochore Fiber A spindle which connects the centromere of a chromosome to the centrosome of the cell
Nucleolus A spherical organelle in the nucleus that produces ribosomes
Nuclear Envelope A phospholipid bilayer membrane that surrounds the genetic material and the nucleolus
Interphase the first and longest phase of the cell cycle
Prophase the first and longest phase of mitosis
Metaphase the phase of mitosis when sister chromatids line up at the equator of the cell
Anaphase A phase where sister chromatids separate by spindle fibers reeling them to opposite poles of the cell
Telophase A phase where chromosomes uncoil into chromatin and a new nuclear envelope forms
Cytokinesis The final stage of cell division when the cytoplasm splits in 2 and the cell divides

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
