| Term | Definition |

| gravity | the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass |
| meteor | a small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light |
| asteriod | a small rocky body orbiting the sun |
| comet | a celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a "tail" of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun |
| eclipse | an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between in and the observer or between it and its source of illumination |
| axis | an imaginary line drawn about which a body rotates |
| equator | an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0º |
| equinox | both hemispheres are receiving the same amount of sunlight |
| Summer Solstice | the sun gives direct sunlight to the northern hemisphere. The sun is the highest point in the sky |
| Winter Solstice | The sun gives direct sunlight to the southern hemisphere. The sun is the lowest point in the sky |
| seasons | each of the four year periods of the year marked by weather patterns, resulting from the earth's position with the sun |
