| eclipse | event that occurs when the moon moves between the sun and earth, or when earth moves between the sun and moon |
| tides | the rise and fall of sea level caused by the gravitational attraction between the moon and sun |
| system | a portion of the universe and all of its components |
| solar system | system of eight planets and numerous other objects that orbit our sun |
| astronomical unit | unit of measure that equals 150 million km |
| comet | large body of ice and rock that orbits the sun |
| meteorite | any rock from space that survives its plunge through the atmosphere and lands on earth's surface |
| star | a large spherical mass of gas that gives off light and other types of radiation |
| constellation | group of stars that form a pattern in the sky |
| supernova | very bright explosion of the outer part of a supergiant |
| galaxy | group of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity |
| light-year | about 9.5 trillion km, the distance light travels in one year |
