| Biome | major regional or global community of organisms |
| Producer | organisms that make their own food |
| Autotroph | another name for producer |
| Consumer | eat other organisms for nutrients and energy |
| Heterotroph | another name for consumer |
| Chemosynthesis | when an organism converts carbohydrates for a source of energy |
| Food Chain | sequence that links species by feeding relationships |
| Herbivore | consumer that eats only plants |
| Carnivore | consumer that only eats meat |
| Omnivore | consumer that eats plants and animals |
| Detritivore | consumer that eats detritus (dead organic matter) |
| Decomposer | break down organic matter into simpler compounds |
| Specialists | consumer that eats one organism type or a small variety |
| Generalists | consumer with a varying diet |
| Trophic Level | levels of nourishment in a food chain |
| Food Web | a chart that links all possible eating relationships with multiple organisms |
