mountain high often rocky area of a land mass with steep or sloping sides
plateau large flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land
plain flat, usually few trees, land that has only a small change in elevation
valley long low area of land, often with a river or stream running through it, surrounded by higher land
canyon a deep narrow valley with steep sides (gorge)
trench a long narrow valley on an ocean or seafloor
seamount underwater mountain rising from the ocean floor having a peak or flat top summit below the water
continental shelf plateau of land surface into the ocean but underwater
continental slope sloping region between continental shelf and rise
continental rise wide gentle incline from an ocean bottom to continental slope
mid-ocean ridge long underwater mountain range formed from volcanic rock released during plate motion
abyssal plain a broad flat area of seafloor at the deepest part of an ocean basin
basin flat area of the ocean floor beginning at the bottom f the continental shelf
guyots flat-topped seamounts
delta triangular deposits of sediments at the mouth of a river
topographic maps map that shows surface features of the Earth, may show natural features such as lakes, rivers, and mountains, as well as cities roads and bridges
elevation the height above sea level at any point on the Earth's surface
relief difference in elevation between the highest and the lowest point in an area
contour lines lines on a topographic map that connect point of equal elevation
contour interval the elevation difference between contours that are next to each other
slope a measure of the steepness of the land
index contour a darker heavier contour line that is usually every 5th line and is labeled with the elevation it represents
