QuestionAnswer
Parkinson's Disease Affecting brain; loss of dopamine; loss of ability to control and initiate movement.
Multiple Sclerosis - Affecting brain and spinal cord; scarring of myelin sheath - Decreased nerve conduction - Loss of motor, sensory, cerebellar function, emotional lability
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) - Degeneration of upper/lower motor neurons of brain stem and spinal cord - Progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, deterioration
Gillian-Barre' Syndrome - Acute attack on peripheral nervous system - Inflammation causes ascending muscle weakness, paralysis and paresthesia
Myasthenia Gravis - Attach on acetylcholine (Ach) receptors - Prevents acetylcholine from stimulating skeletal muscle contraction - No sensory loss
Parkinson's Disease complications - Dysphagia, nutritional problem, loss of spontaneous movement, immobility, falls, pneumonia, dementia
Parkinson's Disease S&S Rigidity, tremors at rest, decreased arm swing, bradykinesia, stooped, shuffling, difficulty initiating movement

Multiple Sclerosis complications - Immobility, UTI, pneumonia, depression
ALS S&S
ALS Complications - Paralysis - Respiratory failure - Death from respiratory failure in 3 years
Gillian-Barre' Syndrome S&S Ascending bilateral weakness and paresthesia of legs progressing upward to include trunk and respiratory muscles.
Myasthenia Gravis S&S Descending muscle weakness, eye/mouth drooping, decreased arm strength, may progress to respiratory fatigue
Gillian-Barre' Syndrome complication Paralysis, aspiration, autonomic nervous system involvement, dysrhythmias, respiratory failure
Myasthenia Gravis complication - Respiratory failure - Myasthenia crisis (increased muscle weakness) caused by missing medication - Cholinergic crisis: too many myasthenia meds causing cholinergic effects (NVD, sweating, salivation, weakness, bradycardia
