Cells SOL Review

Identifying parts of a cell

Cell PartFunction
Nucleus "Brain" of the cell because it controls all the activities in the cell.- contains the DNA
Chromosome (DNA) Tells the directions for which proteins to make.Gives the traits for the cell/organism.(like a recipe for cake)
Mitochondria Provides energy for the cell to use so it's referred to as the "Powerhouse" of the cell (like a battery)
Chloroplast (Plants only) Traps energy from the sun and turns it into food energy (Photosynthesis)
Ribosome Proteins are made here (like a kitchen where dinner is made)
Endoplasmic Reticulum Transports substances through out the cell (like the subway system of the cell)
Golgi (apparatus,body or complex) Packages substances to be shipped throughout the cell. (like a post office for the cell)
Lysosomes Contain digestive enzymes. (like a stomach)
Vacuole Stores food, water, or wastes (like a refrigerator or trash can)
Cell Wall (Plant cell only) Supports the cell (like the walls of a house)
Cytoskeleton Provides structure and framework for the cell (like our skeleton does for us)
Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance that fills inside of cell and holds the organelles in place. (like jello in a jello fruit salad
Cell Membrane Controls what moves in and out of the cell (like a gate in a fence)
