Astronomy

Unit 5

Question/TermAnswer/Definition
Describe the phases of the moon. Over the course of two weeks, the Moon's phases move from new to crescent, then quarter, half, gibbous, and finally full.
Differentiate between apogee and perigee. Although they both refer to the distance from the Earth to the Moon, they differ in that when the Moon is at "apogee" it is the farthest point from the Earth, where as the point of perigee is when the Moon is at its closest to the Earth.
Describe the bow shock. The meeting place of Earth's magnetic field and the incoming charged particles of the solar wind.
Describe the Hoba West. This Meteorite is the largest one ever found. It weighs nearly 45 tons.
Describe an annular eclipse. This type of eclipse happens when the Moon is too far away for its shadow of total darkness to reach the Earth's surface.
Describe meteor showers, and include when they occur. These "showers" look a lot like, what is termed 'falling stars;' as they come through our atmosphere they begin to disintegrate.
Describe the terminator of the Moon. The terminator of the moon is its dividing line between the light and shadow.
What marks the southern limit of the Sun's direct rays? The Tropic of Capricorn.
Describe the lunar eclipse. This type of eclipse happens when the Moon passes partially or wholly into Earth's shadow cone. The lunar eclipses are the most common eclipse.
Describe Maria, and name the largest and smallest. Maria is made of basalt rock and aggregates of dust and stones. Largest - Mare Imbrium Smallest - Mare Venetum/Humorum
Give the time for 1 nutation, 1 precession, 1 galactic year, 1 synodic month, and 1 sidereal month. 1 Nutation - 19 years 1 Precession - 25,800 years 1 Galactic Year - 200 million years 1 Synodic Month - 29.53 days in relation to the moon 1 Sidereal Month - 27.32 days in relation to the stars
What contributes to tidal movements on Earth? Both the Moon and the Sun contribute to the tidal movements on Earth.
Describe Earth's magnetic field. What are the benefits of Earth having an extensive magnetic field? The overall strength of the field is weak. The main reason that it's good to have a magnetic field is that lethal solar radiation is unable to penetrate to the ground making the conditions able to help support life.
Describe the stratosphere, and explain why it impacts our day-to-day life. It is usually very calm, (free from turbulence & free of clouds and dust. The stratosphere impacts our day-to-day life because the ozone barrier exists here, and it serves as a barrier to incoming ultraviolet radiation solar wind particles & meteors.
What constellation is the first of the zodiac? Aries
Describe our atmosphere, and explain why it is important that it is a physical mixture of gases. Our atmosphere is NOT a chemical mixture of gases, but is rather a physical mixture. This fact is important b/c we are able to more easily remove one gas (oxygen) from the mixture without affecting the whole.
Define "equinox." The equinox is where the Sun appears to cross our equator during our yearly seasonal cycle.
