8th- Groundwater
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| groundwater | water that soaks into the ground as it enters tiny air spaces in soil and rocks |
| recharge area | the region that permits water to flow downward in response to gravity |
| zone of saturation | area in the aquifer where all spaces are filled with water |
| water table | the top of the zone of saturation |
| zone of aeration | area of an aquifer between the water table and surface that holds some water and has air-filled pore spaces |
| porosity | percent of material's volume that is pore space; depends on particle shape and particle sorting |
| particle sorting | describes the sizes of particles in a section of an aquifer; well-sorted is all the same, poorly-sorted is different sizes |
| permeability | ability of rock to allow water to pass through; depends on pore size and connectedness of pores |
| impermable | materials that do not allow water to pass through |
| permeable | materials that do allow water to pass through |
| aquitard | a layer that stops the vertical movement of water; synonym is aquiclude |
| aquifer | layer through which groundwater moves |
