Planetary Systems

planet a large, round, natural object that orbits a star and clears the space around it
asteroid a rock or iron object that orbits the Sun
comet a small body made of ice and dust that orbits the Sun in a large oval path
lunar cycle the 4-week period during which the Moon orbits Earth one full time and goes through all 4 of its phases
waxing moon the lit portion of the Moon grows larger in appearance each day
waning moon the lit portion of the Moon grows smaller in appearance each day
gibbous any phase of the moon when the lit portion of the Moon is greater than a quarter moon
constellation a pattern of stars that has a name and never changes
crescent moon any phase of the moon that the lit portion of the moon is less than a quarter moon
new moon when the moon is positioned between earth and the sun. The moon is invisible (no moon)
full moon when Earth is positioned between the sun and the moon. The whole face of the moon is lit
1st quarter moon when the right half of the moon's face is lit (1 week after new moon)
third quarter moon when the left half of the moon's face is lit (3 weeks after last new moon, and 1 week before the next new moon)
