Tetonic Plates
Science Vocab
Continental drift | the movement of Earth's continents relative to each other |
plate tectonics theory | the theory that Earth's crust is made up of individual plates that gradually move in relation to each other |
tectonic plate | one of several huge pieces of Earth's crust |
lithosphere | the part of Earth which is composed mostly of rocks; the crust and outer mantle |
fault | a crack in a body of rock along which rocks on opposite sides slide past each other |
seismic wave | waves of energy that travel through Earth’s interior due to an earthquake, other tectonic forces, or an explosion |
seismograph | an instrument used to detect and measure earthquake waves and other ground vibrations |
Pangaea | the large supercontinent at the end of the Paleozoic Era consisting of all the land on Earth, including all seven continents and other landmasses |
seafloor spreading | the process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms at mid-ocean ridges as tectonic plates pull away from each other |
subduction | the sinking of an oceanic plate beneath a plate of lesser density at a convergent boundary |
convection | the transfer of heat from one place to another caused by movement of molecules |
What causes plates to move? | convection currents |
What are the four types of volcanoes? | cinder, cone, shield, and stratovolcano |
What is continental theory? | The idea that earthś continents moved apart from a singe large continent called Pangaea. |
What evidence supports this theory? | Fossils of the same species were found on different continents. The continents seem to fit together, or were once joined. Glacial evidence show that the ice flowing from glaciers come from one point. |
Why wasn’t accepted at first? | Alfred Wegener couldn´t explain how the continents moved. |
What are P-waves? | seismic waves that travel the fastest. |
What is a convergent boundary? | two plates moving towards each other. Example: Himalayas |
What is a divergent boundary? | Two plates moving away from each other. Example: Mid-Atlantic Ridges |
What is a transform boundary? | Two plates sliding past one another. Example: San Andreas Fault |
Do tectonic plates move? | Yes, about 5 centimeters per year. |
Where is the Ring of Fire? | The Pacific Ocean. |
