Bonding
Vocabulary for Chemical bonding
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Electron Cloud | the group of electrons revolving around the nucleus of an atom; a cloudlike group of electrons. |
Energy level | the fixed amount of energy that a system described by quantum mechanics, such as a molecule, atom, electron, or nucleus, can have. |
Electron Dot diagram | A structural formula in which electrons are represented by dots; two dots between atoms represent a covalent bond. |
Chemical Bond | a mutual attraction between two atoms resulting from a redistribution of their outer electrons. |
Ion | an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. |
Ionic Bond | when a positively charged ion forms a bond with a negatively charged ions and one atom transfers electrons to another. |
Compound | made up or consisting of several parts or elements, in particular. |
Metallic Bond | the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged atomic nuclei of metal atoms and the delocalised electrons in the metal. |
Covalent Bond | a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. |
Molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
Polar Bond | A type of covalent bond between two atoms in which electrons are shared unequally, resulting in a bond in which one atom has a slightly negative charge and the other a slightly positive charge. |
Chemical formula | A compound is a substance made up of a definite proportion of two or more elements. |
