| prominence | arch-like explosion on the sun |
| light year | unit of measurement that astronomers use to measure distance in space |
| galaxy | large group of stars, gas and dust held together by gravity |
| milky way | a spiral galaxy that our solar system is located in |
| shape | what we classify galaxies by |
| the big bang | the theory for how the universe began |
| redshift | proves that the universe is expanding and galaxies are spreading apart |
| gas giants | the outer planets are also known as this |

| solstice | longest/shortest day of the year. Start of summer and winter |
| equinox | equal day and night |
| spring tides | tide that occurs during full and new moon higher tidal change from low to high tide |
| neap tides | tides that occur during 1st and 3rd quarter not much change between high and low tides |
| 29.5 days | amount of time it takes the moon to revolve around earth |
| waxing | what we call a moon that appears to be growing |
| waning | what we call a moon that appears to be shrinking |
| crescent | a moon that is less than a quarter full |
| gibbous | a moon that is more than a quarter full but not quite a full moon |
