Mineral Terms and Identification

TermDefinition
What is a mineral? A mineral that has a crystal structure, is not man-made, inorganic, and solid.
What are the 6 main properties to identify a mineral? Color, luster, streak, hardness, cleavage, and special properties.
What is color in terms of identifying a mineral? The color of a mineral is not always reliable.
What is luster in terms of identifying a mineral? How a mineral shines or reflects light.
What is streak in terms of identifying a mineral? The color of the powder form of the mineral.
What is cleavage or fracture in terms of identifying a mineral? How the mineral breaks; in flat surfaces or unevenly.
What is hardness in terms of identifying a mineral? The softness/hardness of a mineral measured on the Mohs scale.
What are special properties in terms of identifying a mineral? Unique properties in minerals.
What is an element? A substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.
What is a compound? A substance made of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds.
What is a crystal? A solid whose atoms are arranged in a definite pattern.
What is a silicate? A mineral that contains a combination of silicon, oxygen and one or more metals.
What is a non-silicate? A mineral that does not contain compounds of silicon and oxygen.
What is a pegmatite? Tear shaped bodies formed below Earth where gemstones may form.
What is an Ore? Mineral deposit large enough to be mined.
Hot water solutions could form what minerals? Gold, Copper, Sulfur
Metallic A mineral that is shiny, do let light pass through them and are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Nonmetallic A mineral that can be shiny or dull, may not let light pass through and are good insulators of electricity, not conductors.
What type of mining occurs near the surface of Earth? Surface mining.
What type of mining occurs deep underground? Subsurface mining.
Gemstones Minerals that are considered beautiful and valuable.
The special property that causes some minerals to glow under ultraviolet light. Fluorescence
The special property which can be found using a Geiger counter. Radioactivity
The special property which may cause fizzing if acid is applied. Chemical Reaction
The special property which may attract iron. Magnetism
The special property that my create double vision. Optical Property
Metamorphic Rock changed by heat and pressure.
