Genetics

TermDefinition
Allele The different forms of a gene such as a dominant or recessive, represented by a letter.
Dominant Gene Represented by a capital letter.
Recessive Gene Represented by a lower case letter.
Sexual Reproduction Two parents produce an offspring with a mix of traits from both parents.
Asexual Reproduction One parent produces an offspring that is one exact copy of the parent.
Chromosome Carries genetic information that controls inherited characteristics such as eye color.
Gene A set of intructions for an inhereited trait found in a section of DNA.
Trait The specific forms of a characteristic that are passed onto offspring through genes.
Heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring.
Homozygous (pure bred) Two of the same alleles; both dominant or both recessives; RR or rr.
Heterozygous (Hybrid) Two different alleles; one dominant with one recessive; Rr
Phenotype The physical characteristic of a person (visible trait).
Genotype The genetic makeup of allele combinations.
Dominant Allele An allele whose trait is always visible when the allele is present.
Recessive Allele
Genetics The study of heredity.
