QuestionAnswer
Energy The ability to do work. This enables organisms the use matter in life processes.
Energy Transformations This takes place when energy changes from one form to another.
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed.
Kinetic Energy The energy of an object due to its movement
Potential Energy The energy an object has due to its position, shape, or chemical composition.
Mechanical Energy The sum of an object's kinetic and potential energy
Sound Energy Sound energy results from the vibration of particles, and is a type of kinetic energy. Sound energy can't travel through empty space.
Electromagnetic Energy Energy that is transported through electromagnetic waves. An example is radiation from the sun
Chemical Energy The energy stored in chemical bonds that hold compounds together
Thermal Energy The total kinetic energy of particles
Electrical Energy This can be transferred when the energy is within an electrical current.
Nuclear Energy This is found in the nuclei of an atom. It is released when a nucleus breaks or joins another atom.
Non-Renewable Energy This is found in energy sources that can't easily be renewed. Some examples are coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
Energy Transfer The transfer of energy from one object to another
Closed System Energy can only be transformed, since nothing can get in or out. This is self containing. An example is humans.
Open System Energy can be transformed or transferred. Matter can move freely.
Solar Energy Energy transferred from the sun into space from electromagnetic waves.
Wind Air that moves parallel to the ground. It is caused by uneven heating of the earth from the sun
Renewable Energy Energy that is found in sources that can easily be renewed.
