EnergyUnitVocab
This is for Mrs. McSword's science class.
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Energy | The ability to do work. This enables organisms the use matter in life processes. |
Energy Transformations | This takes place when energy changes from one form to another. |
Law of Conservation of Energy | Energy can not be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed. |
Kinetic Energy | The energy of an object due to its movement |
Potential Energy | The energy an object has due to its position, shape, or chemical composition. |
Mechanical Energy | The sum of an object's kinetic and potential energy |
Sound Energy | Sound energy results from the vibration of particles, and is a type of kinetic energy. Sound energy can't travel through empty space. |
Electromagnetic Energy | Energy that is transported through electromagnetic waves. An example is radiation from the sun |
Chemical Energy | The energy stored in chemical bonds that hold compounds together |
Thermal Energy | The total kinetic energy of particles |
Electrical Energy | This can be transferred when the energy is within an electrical current. |
Nuclear Energy | This is found in the nuclei of an atom. It is released when a nucleus breaks or joins another atom. |
Non-Renewable Energy | This is found in energy sources that can't easily be renewed. Some examples are coal, petroleum, and natural gas. |
Energy Transfer | The transfer of energy from one object to another |
Closed System | Energy can only be transformed, since nothing can get in or out. This is self containing. An example is humans. |
Open System | Energy can be transformed or transferred. Matter can move freely. |
Solar Energy | Energy transferred from the sun into space from electromagnetic waves. |
Wind | Air that moves parallel to the ground. It is caused by uneven heating of the earth from the sun |
Renewable Energy | Energy that is found in sources that can easily be renewed. |
