1. globe a spherical model of the earth
2. map a representation of the earth or a part of the earth, usually on a flat surface
3. meteoroligist a scientist who studies the earth's atmosphere and who monitors, studies, and forecasts the weather
4. geologist a scientist who studies the history and structure of the earth as it is recorded in rocks
5. seismologist a scientist who studies earthquakes
6. volcanologist a scientist who studies volcanoes and volcanic phenomena
7. vortex the movement of liquids or gases in a spiral around a central axis
8. hurricane a massive rotating storm that forms north of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean, eastern Pacific Ocean, or Carribean Sea when warm air rises over tropical waters
9. tornado a violent windstorm that spirals around a rotating column of air and moves in a narrow path on land
10. eye a really large vortex in the middle of a hurricane
11. funnel cloud a rapidly rotating cloud visible as a funnel at the base of a thunderstorm
12. cyclone a massive, rotating storm that forms in the Indian Ocean and off the coast of Australia
13. typhoon a massive, rotating storm that forms north of the equator in the western Pacific Ocean
14. atmosphere the envelope of gases that surrounds the earth, a blanket of air that keeps us warm
15. nitrogen a colorless, odorless unreactive gas that forms about 78 percent of the earth's atmosphere; a greenhouse gas
16. carbon dioxide a colorless, odorless, incombustible gas in the atmosphere, formed during respiration; greenhouse gas
17. greenhouse gases gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen, that trap solar energy
18. water vapor water in the form of a gas
19. stratosphere the second lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere, planes fly in this layer
20. mesosphere the layer of the Earth's atmosphere right above the stratosphere, meteor showers happen here
21. ionosphere the lower part of the thermosphere, contains electrically charged ions
22. exosphere the outer layer of the thermosphere, we exit into space here
23. troposphere the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere, the layer we live in
24. thermosphere the outer most layer of the Earth's atmosphere, contains the ionosphere and exosphere; hottest layer
25. GOES & POES satellites satelites that are sent into space by scientists that don't change their orbit around the earth unless they are told
26. tornado alley an area of the Great Plains centered on eastern Kansas and Oklahoma and including parts of the surrounding states, where tornadoes are frequent
27. isobar lines on a weather map joining places that have the same temperature
28. isotherm lines on a weather map joining places that have the same air pressure
29. unstable air mass when a cold air mass slides under a warm one a lifts it up, this can create storms, rainy and stormy
30. stable air mass when the air is calm and at a constant, sunny and clear
31. weather the state of the atmosphere at a particular time and place
32. climate weather patterns that are characteristic of a region or place for many years
33. convection the process by which heat moves efficiently through air or water
