| wavelength | horizontal distance between two wave crests |
| aquifer | underground layer of rock or soil that holds water |
| pores | tiny openings in and between particles of rock and soil that may contain air or water |
| transpiration | process by which plants release water vapor through their leaves |
| trough | lowest point of a wave |
| tides | daily rise and fall of Earth's waters on shores |
| current | large stream of moving water that flows through the ocean |
| water cycle | continuous process by which water moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back |
| wave height | vertical distance from the crest of a wave to the trough |
| watershed | land area that supplies water to a river system |
| groundwater | water that fills cracks and pores in underground soil and rock layers |
| drought | water shortage caused by long periods of low precipitation in a particular area |
| condensation | process by which a gas such as water vapor, changes to liquid such as water |
| saturated zone | layer of permeable rock or soil in which the cracks and pores are completely filled with water |
| permeable | characteristics of materials such as sand and gravel that allow water to pass easily through them |
| continental slope | an incline leading down from the edge of the continental shelf |
