6th CK Tectonics 2

6th CK SCIENCE Plate Tectonics 2 COMPLETE

TermDefinition
Earthquake shaking of the earth caused by pieces of the earth’s crust that suddenly shift
Epicenter point on the surface directly above the focus
Fault a break in the earth’s crust where movement occurs; a break or crack along which rocks move
Fault-block mountain a mountain that forms where two normal faults uplift a block of rock
Fault line a break or fracture in the ground that occurs when the Earth's tectonic plates move or shift and are areas where earthquakes are likely to occur.
Faulting a break or crack along which rocks move
Focus point below the surface where the earthquake occurs (where rock that is under stress breaks and causes an earthquake)
Folding/Folds bends in rock that form by compression stress forces
Foot wall the block of rock below the fault
Fossil preserved remains or traces of an ancient organism
Fracture in minerals, the way a mineral that does not cleave breaks along a rough or jagged surface
Friction a force (push or pull) that opposes the motion of a surface as it moves across another surface
Granite a light-colored igneous rock with grains large enough to be visible with the unaided eye; forms from the slow crystallization of magma below Earth's surface; composed mainly of quartz and feldspar with minor amounts of mica and other minerals.
Gravity the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass
Hanging wall the block of rock above the fault
Hot spot a hole in the middle of plates directly above a source of magma
Inner Core the inner section of a spherical mass at the center of the earth composed of solid iron and nickel
Inorganic not formed from living things or the remains of living things
Isostasy the balancing of the downward force of the crust and the upward force of the mantle
Lava molten rock at the Earth’s surface

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
