6th CK Tectonics 1

6th CK SCIENCE Plate Tectonics/Volcanoes Part 1 (a-d) COMPLETE

TermDefinition
Alfred Wegener scientist who proposed the theory of continental drift
Anticline an upward fold in rock
Ash (volcanic) finely pulverized lava thrown out by a volcano in eruption. made of tiny fragments of jagged rock, minerals, and volcanic glass; rock particles more than 0.25 mm but less than 5 mm across that are blown into the air by a volcanic eruption
Basalt the dark, dense igneous rock of a lava flow or minor intrusion
Caldera a roughly circular, steep-sided pit at the top of a volcanic cone whose diameter is at least three times its depth
Cinder cones volcanoes made mostly of cinders and other rock particles that have been blown into the air
Cleavage the tendency of a mineral to break alone smooth, definite surfaces
Climate the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.
Collisional Boundary occurs when two continental plates collide
Composite Volcanoes Volcanoes built up alternating layers of rock particles and lava
Compression stress pushes rock together causing middle to become thicker
Continental Drift Theory theory stating that Pangaea split up and the pieces drifted into their present day location and will continue to move; continents are consistently moving apart or drifting away from each other
Continental plate parts of the planet's crust that lie under the surface of land masses below the sea around the world
Convection current a movement of material caused by differences in temperature
Convergent Boundary occurs when an oceanic plate either moves under a continental plate or another oceanic plate
Core the central region of the Earth
Crater a funnel-shaped pit or depression at the top of a volcanic cone
Crust the outermost and thinnest layer of the earth composed of rocky matter less dense than the mantle below; the surface layer of the Earth
Crystal a solid in which the atoms or molecules are arranged in a definite pattern that is repeated over and over again
Deformation any change in shape or volume of earth’s crust
Density the amount of matter in a given space; the mass per unit volume
Divergent Boundary occurs when two plates move away from each other

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
