Science Unit 7 Flash Cards - Physics

TermDefinition
Machine changes the amount and/or direction of the force that must be exerted to do work. You get the same amount of work done with less force - thus it increases efficiency
Fixed Pulley A pulley that stays in place and turns as the cord moves over it. This pulley only gives a directional advantage - it only changes the direction of the force. It does not change the amount of force or distance.
Pulley An arrangement of one or more wheels and ropes. i.e. the string on a flagpole
Inclined Plane A slanted surface used to raise objects. It decreases the force required to raise an object by increasing the distance. i.e. loaded a ramp
Lever A bar that is free to pivot called a fulcrum. The longer the effort arm, the less force required to move an object. i.e. hammer, seesaw, wheelbarrow.
Simple Machine A machine that consists of only 1 part
Work Transfer of energy as well as the result of motion.
Moveable Pulley A pulley that is able to move with the load being raised. This pulley gives a mechanical advantage. It decreases the amount of force by increasing the distance (amount of rope you pull)
Work Something has to move in order for work to be done
Work-Measured in Measured in Jules
Force - Measured in Measured in Newtons
Distance Measured in Meters
Work calculation Work=Force x Distance
Net Force Sum of all forces acting on an object
Force Action that makes an object either move or change shape. ie. push, pull, twist
Unbalanced Force Force t hat changes an objects motion or causes it to accelerate.
Balanced Force Forces are equal and acting in opposite directions. Since the net force is 0, no movement occurs.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
