| Adaptation | Process by which an animal or plant becomes fitted to its environment. |
| Abiotic | Non-living physical and chemical elements of an environment. |
| Biotic | A living thing, such as an animal or plant. |
| Microrganism | A microscopic organism, especially a bacterium, virus, or fungus. |
| Population | A group of the same species occupying a particular geographic area. |
| Community | An interacting group of various species in a common location. |
| Biosphere | The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth, occupied by living organisms. |
| Autotroph | An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide. |
| Heterotroph | An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances. |
