Ecosystems

TermDefinition
Adaptation Process by which an animal or plant becomes fitted to its environment.
Abiotic Non-living physical and chemical elements of an environment.
Biotic A living thing, such as an animal or plant.
Microrganism A microscopic organism, especially a bacterium, virus, or fungus.
Population A group of the same species occupying a particular geographic area.
Community An interacting group of various species in a common location.
Biosphere The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth, occupied by living organisms.
Autotroph An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Heterotroph An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
