Theory of Continental drift
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Theory of Continental drift | when a super continent called Pangaea drifted apart into 7 smaller continents and continue to move today. |
| pagaea | a super continent that existed 200 million years ago called Pangaea. It means "one land" or "one Earth." It is the idea that the continents were once all joined. |
| divergent boudary | where tectonic plates move apart <-- --> |
| convergent boudary | where two plates are coming together --> <-- |
| transform boundary | where plates slide past each other in opposite directions --> <-- |
| How land forms can be evidence to support the theory of continental drift? | mountain ranges (South America & Africa) and European & North American coal fields from different continents matched up with other continents |
| What is the evidence of the coast lines? | They match fairly closely. They match very closely at a depth of about 1000 meters! |
| What evidence is there from satellites? | Using satellites and lasers, scientists have measured the movement of the continents. They move on average 2 cm per year. |
| What evidence of reptile fossils supports the theory of continental drift? | Fossils of extinct reptiles were found in India, Africa, and Antarctica. They could not survive the cold of Antarctica today. They are found nowhere else. |
| What is a theory? | An idea that is supported by lots of evidence and is considered by most scientiss to be a very good (or even the strongest) explanation of the evidence. |
| What are the three types of evidences to support Wegener's theory? | land forms, fossils, climate |
| What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics? | very slow convection currents flow in the asthenosphere which provide the force for the movement of the plates of the lithosphere |
| How fossils can be evidence to support the theory of continental drift? | Remains of animals & plants that couldn’t swim/travel long distances were found on different continents that were separated by large bodies of water. For example, Glossopteris (ferns) in Antarctica and Mesosaurus (reptiles) in Africa & South America |
| How climate can be evidence to support the theory of continental drift? | Tropical plant fossils were found in areas that the climate wouldn’t support their growth (Artic) and glacial scratches were found on rocks found in South Africa |
| boundary | A ________ is a place where tectonic plates touch. |
| What are the three boundaries that all tectonic plates share with other tectonic plates? | convergent, divergent, and transform |
| Convection | _______________ is the movement of matter resulting from differences in density that are caused by temperature variations |
| Alfred Wegener | is the first scientist to hypothesize that the continents had moved from their original locations? |
