A set of vocabulary words for my Earth and Space Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lithosphere | The outermost rigid section of the Earth's structure, consisting of the crust and some of the mantle. |
| Asthenosphere | The layer beneath the Lithosphere, where convection is thought to occur in plate tectonics. |
| Magnetic Field | A magnetized field that extend outside of Earth and meets with the Sun's solar winds. |
| Hydrosphere | All of the Earth's water substances; lakes, ponds, streams, oceans, clouds. |
| Magnetosphere | The region around Earth where its magnetosphere resides. |
| Atmosphere | The gasses that surround Earth or another planet. |
| Dynamo Effect | The origin theory of how Earth's magnetic field came to be. |
| Continental Drift Hypothesis | A theory that all of the Earth's continents were once linked in one landmass. |
| Subduction Zone | The downward or horizontal movement of a plate. |
| lamproites | Rocks derived form the mantle layer. |
| Transform Plate Boundaries | A fault line where the tectonic motion is very horizontal, and does no damage to the lithosphere. |
| Divergent Plate Boundaries | A fault line where the plates are moving away from each other. |
| Convergent Plate Boundaries | A fault line where one plate is moving on top of the other. |
| Conduction | The heat transfer through touch. |
| Convection | The transfer of heat through currents. |
| Radiation | The transfer of heat through light. |
| Plasma | An ionized gas that is predominately common throughout the universe. |
| Geomagnetic Reversals | Where the Earth's magnetic field technically reverses, and the north is orientated with the south, and vice versa. |
| Coriolis Effect | An effect where a mass moving in a rotating system has a force acted upon it, deriving it from its rotation. |
| Ophiolite | An igneous rock consisting largely of serpentine, believed to be created during an underwater explosion. |
| Global Warning | A greenhouse effect occurring on our atmosphere that is melting the polar ice caps. |
| Plate Tectonics | A theory that describes the plate movements of earths crust. |
| Doppler Effect | The increase and decrease of the frequency of a sound on an object. |
| Greenhouse Effect | A motion that traps excess energy from the sun in the earths atmosphere. |
| Mantle | A large part of the Earth between the core and the crust, containing molten materials. Convection currents move through it, moving the tectonic plates within the lithosphere. |
| Seismograph | An instrument that measures the information of earthquakes. |
| Seismic Waves | An elastic wave produced within the earth by earthquakes or any means. |
| Sea-floor Spreading | The formation of new areas of ocean crust created by tectonic movement. |
| Xenolith | A piece of rock that lies within another rock that isn't usually from that area. |
