Cells Unit

5. Cell Energy

Sun Energy source for plants.
Food Energy source for animals.
photosynthesis the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make food.
pigments molecules that absorb light energy
Chlorophyll main pigment used in photosynthesis and gives plants their green color. It is also found in chloroplasts.
two ways that animal cells get energy cellular respiration and fermentation
cellular respiration the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food. Food is broken down into carbon dioxide and water and energy is released.
fermentation the breakdown of food without the use of oxygen
cell membrane in prokaryotic cells (single celled), cellular respiration happens here.
mitochondria in eukaryotic cells (multicellular) cellular respiration happens here.
