TOPOGRAPHIC MAP shows the detailed shapes of Earths surface, along with its natural and human-made features
ELEVATION the height above sea level of any point on earths surface
RELIEF the difference in elevation between the highest and lowest point point in an area
CONTOUR LINES are lines on a topographic map that connect points of equal elevation.
CONTOUR INTERVAL the elevation difference between contours that are next to each other
SLOPE is a measure of the steepness of the land
GEOLOGIC MAP show the surface geology of an area.
CROSS SECTION a type of diagram to show a vertical slice through rocks below the surface
REMOTE SENSING is the process of collecting information about an area without coming into physical contact with it
POLITICAL MAP map shows boundaries between countries, states, and townships
ROAD MAP a map that shows interstates or a range of roads from four-lane expressways to gravel roads. People use road maps to find their way from one place to another.
PHYSICAL MAP maps show features such as mountains and lakes
INDEX CONTOUR on a topographic map, only the index contour are labeled with elevation.
PROFILE information from contour lines can be used to draw an accurate PROFILE of the topography of the land.
KEY LEGEND a topographic map describes the symbols used on the map
GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) is a group of satellites used for navigation
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) stores and analyzes data sent to it usually by GPS
REMOTE SENSING when you collect information about an area without having physical contact
LAND SET scans earths entire surface every 16 days
TOPEX/JASON-I satellites have been used in measuring bulges and valleys below the oceans surface
SEA BEAMS a device that uses sonar to map the bottom of the ocean. Sonar is used from a ship.
RELIEF MAPS maps that use shading and shadows to show to show mountains and flat areas.
