| acid deposition | a deposit of water vapor formed in the atmosphere, e.g. dew, rain, snow, hail, or fog, that is high in acid content because of atmospheric pollution |
| stream order | Classification of streams according to their hierarchical position in the drainage network. In the most widely used system, first order streams are the outermost tributaries. |
| topographic map | In modern mapping, a topographic map is a type of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually now using contour lines, but historically using a variety of methods. |
| watershed | an area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas. |
| wetlands | is a land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, such that it takes on the characteristics of a distinct ecosystem. |
| hydrology | is the scientific study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water on Earth and other planets, including the hydrologic cycle, water resources and environmental watershed sustainability. |
| groundwater | is the water present beneath Earth's surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations. A unit of rock or an unconsolidated deposit is called an aquifer when it can yield a usable quantity of water. |
| mitigation | the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something. |
| lentic | inhabiting or situated in still, fresh water. Compare with lotic. |
| lotic | inhabiting or situated in rapidly moving fresh water. Compare with lentic. |
