What is Mechanical Weathering? Process of breaking down big rocks into smaller rocks
What is erosion? The process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents
What is Chemical Weathering? Erosion or breaking down rocks
What is release of pressure? In pressure release, also known as unloading, overlying materials are removed , which causes underlying rocks to expand and fracture parallel to the surface
What is Oxidation? The process or result of
What is Uniformitarianism? The concept that current geological processes explain all past geological occurrences
What is Topsoil? The top layer of the soil
What is Subsoil? The soil lying immediately under the surface soil
What is Bedrock? A solid rock beneath the surface materials such as soil and gravel
What is Humus? The organic component of soil, formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil microorganisms
What is pH? Measures of how acidic/basic water is
What is Decomposition? The state or process of rotting; decay
What is Loam? A fertile soil of clay and sand containing humus
What is Conservation Plowing? A method in which the dead stalks from the previous year's crop are left in the ground to hold the soil in place
What is Contour Plowing? Plowing along the contours of the land in order to minimize soil erosion
