What is a cell? The smallest unit of life that contains all the characteristics of life
What piece of equipment can be used to see cells? Microscope
What is the name given to a sample placed under a microscope? Speciman
What is the function of stage clips? Keeps the sample in place
What is the function of the objective lens? Magnifies the speciman
What is the function of the course focus wheel? Brings the image into a rough focus
What is the function of the fine focus wheel? Brings the image into a fine focus
What stain is used when looking at onion cells under a microscope? Iodine
What is the function of the cell membrane? Controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is the cytoplasm? Jelly-like substance where all organelles are held e.g. nucleus
What is the function of the nucleus? The control center for the cell. Contains DNA.
What is the function of the cell wall? Strengthens and gives shape
What is the function of the chloroplast? Contains chlorophyll that allows plants to absorb sunlight for food
What is the function of the vacuole? Stores food
What is a tissue? A group of cells that work together for the same function e.g. muscle
What is an organ? A group of tissues that work together for the same function e.g. heart
What is an organ system? A group of organs that work together e.g. digestive system
What is an organism? Result of all organ systems working together e.g. human
What is a population? Individual organisms of the same species e.g. human
What is a community? Populations of different species that live close together
What is an ecosystem? Communities that interact with their environment
What do plant cells contain that animals cell do not? Cell wall, chloroplast
