TermDefinition
Ozone 3 oxygen atoms combined together, it absorbs ultraviolet radiation
Troposphere layer of the atmosphere closese to earth. where weather and air polution happens
Stratosphere layer above the troposphere, made up of ozone, increase in temperature
Mesosphere layer above the stratosphere, temperature decreases
Thermosphere layer above the mesosphere, temperature increases again
Exosphere outer most layer of earth's atmosphere
Radiation the transfer of energy through space by visible light
Conduction the transfer of energy through molecules colliding, substance must be in contact with one another
convection transfer of energy by flow of a heated substance:warm air rises, cool air sinks
temperature measurement of how rapidly or slowly molecules move aroung
heat the transfer of energy that occurs between 2 substances at different temperatures: flows from high to low
dew point the temperature the air must be cooled to reach saturation: condensation occurs
condensation change of gas to a liquid phase
lifted condensation level (LCL) the elevation at which condensation occurs clouds form
temperature inversion an increase in temperature with an increase in elevation in the atmosphere
humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
relative humidity the ratio of water vapor in a volume of air relative to how much water vapor the air is capable of holding: expressed as a %
condensation nuclei small particles around which cloud droplets can form
orographic lifting cloud formation created by warm, moist air rising up a mountain
stability ability of an air mass to stop rising
coalescense cloud droplets collide and form larger droplets that fall to the ground

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
