Science Exam 7 Qs

QuestionAnswer
Explain the theory of continental drift and Wegener's evidence to support it The theory that the continents can move apart from each other and have done so in the past. The shape of the continents fit together like a puzzle. Fossils found only on the "matching" coast lines of Africa and South America.
Why do plates move? In the mantle currents of circulating magma turn like several Ferris wheels in never-ending circles
Has the magnetic pole of each continent always been where it is now? How do we know? no, they studied the magnetic characteristics of rocks from many different places and found that the magnetic pole of each continent had changed direction many times.
Be able to explain convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries, the stress that occurs at each and events or structures caused by each. convergent - the boundary between two plates that are moving together divergent - the boundary between two plates that are moving away from each other transform boundaries-the boundary between two plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
How is Earth's crust recycled? Sections of the Earth are separating and that new crust is forming through the gap. Old crust is pushed farther away from the ridge by new crust, and all crust is eventually recycled.
Know the difference between the Theory of Plate Tectonics and Wegener's Theory of Continental Drift and be able to explain both. Theory of Plate Tectonics is that the continents and the oceans rest on large moving plates. Continental Drift is that all land was once connected and drifted apart.
Know the types of deformation that rock experiences and what happens in each case. folding- bending of rock layers due to stress in the Earth's crust faulting- breaking of the Earth's crust and the sliding of the blocks of crust along the break
What are continents divided by? Deep oceans
What causes sea-floor spreading? New oceanic lithosphere is formed at a mid ocean ridge as older materials are pulled away from the ridge
What are the 3 types of faults? normal faults reverse faults lateral faults
What happens along normal faults, reverse faults, and lateral (or strike-slip)faults? In a normal Fault, the hanging wall slides down the footwall. In a reverse fault the hanging wall is pushed upward due to compression. In a lateral fault, the hanging wall and footwall slide past each other.
What are the 3 types of mountains? Folded Mountains Fault-Block Mountain Volcanic Mountain

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
