Tectonics the study of the movement and changes in the rocks that make up the Earth's crust
Fault a break in the Earth's crust along which rocks move
Shearing Stress the stress produced by two tectonic plates sliding past each other horizontally
Divergent Boundary the boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other
Sea-floor spreading the process by which new oceanic lithosphere is formed at a mid ocean ridge as older materials are pulled away for the ridge
asthenosphere the layer of the upper mantle composed of low-density rock material that is semiplastic, like putty
subduction the process of one tectonic plate being pushed under another tectonic plate
plate boundary the point at which one tectonic plate touches another
fracture a mineral's tendency to break along irregular surfaces; a break in the Earth's surface
convergent boundary the boundary between two plates that are moving together
Mid-ocean ridge the mountain chains that form on the ocean floor where tectonic plates pull apart
trench a deep underwater valley
compressional stress the stress produced by two tectonic plates coming together
tensional stress the stress produced by two tectonic plates moving apart
transform boundary the boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
folding the bending of rock layers due to stress in the Earth's crust

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
