Eberhard Sci. Ch. 5

Eberhard Science Ch. 5 Weather

QuestionAnswer
Name four weather conditions. temperature, wind speed, wind direction, precipitation
Define temperature the condition of how hot or cold the air is
How is temperature measured? using a thermometer, in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Define wind speed. the condition of how fast the wind is moving
How is wind speed measured? using an anemometer which counts how many times the cups spin in a certain amount of time
Define wind direction. the condition determined by where the wind is coming from
How is wind direction determined? a wind or weather vane points to the direction that the wind is coming from
Define precipitation. the condition of the type of water falling ot Earth from the clouds
How is precipitation measured? by a rain gauge in inches
What is evaporation? liquid water becoming a gas
What is water vapor? water in gas form
What causes evaporation? the Sun's energy (heat)
What is condensation? water vapor changing back to droplets of liquid water.
What causes condensation? when the air temperature cools
Give several examples of condensation. dew, fog, your breath on a cold day, bathroom mirrors after a hot shower
What is precipitation? any form of water that falls from the clouds
Name 4 types of precipitation. rain, hail, sleet, snow
What does the air temperature have to be for it to sleet, snow, or hail? freezing
What is runoff? the precipitation that falls on land surfaces and attempts to return to the ocean or lakes
Describe cumulus clouds. puffy, lumpy-looking, often with a flat bottom
What weather do cumulus clouds bring? When dark, they bring rain. When white, they do not bring rain.
Describe cirrus clouds. high, thin, wispy, made of ice crystals
What weather do cirrus clouds indicate? fair weather
Describe stratus clouds. thick layers, low, spread out covering a large area
How do clouds form? Clouds form when water vapor in the air rises, cools, and condenses, forming water droplets
What is a cloud? a collection of tiny liquid water droplets
What are meteorologists? scientists who get information from a variety of sources and use them to make predictions about the weather
What are fronts? lines between air masses
What happens to the air temperature when a warm front passes over an area? it warms up
What happens to the air temperature when a cold front passes over an area? it cools off
What 2 weather conditions can be found on a weather map? temperature and precipitation
What kind of air temperature might winds blowing down from the north bring? cold
What are the characteristics of a thunderstorm? A severe storm with lightning, thunder, heavy rain and strong winds.
What are some effects of a thunderstorm? flooding, fires, strong winds can blow over trees or power lines
What should you do during a thunderstorm? Stay inside, out of the water, don't stand under trees
What is a tornado? A small, funnel-shaped cloud that comes down from a storm cloud with winds spinning at very high speeds.
What are some effects of a tornado? high winds can tear apart buildings
What should you do during a tornado? Find a safe place away from windows, if outside, lie in a ditch or other low place, don't stay in a car
What is a hurricane? A large storm that forms over warm ocean water with very strong winds that blow in a circular pattern around the center, or eye, of the storm.
What are some effects of a hurricane? high winds that can blow over trees and buildings, flooding, storm surges(high waters on the coast)
What should you do if a hurricane is coming? Board up windows, stay away from windows, move further inland if you are near the coast.
