Periodic Table
You'll learn a lot here... PERIOD!
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Dmitri Mendeleev | He formulate the Periodic Law, created a farsighted version of the periodic table of elements, and used it to correct the properties of some already discovered elements and also to predict the properties of eight elements yet to be discovered. |
Period | One of the horizontal rows in the periodic table, all of whose elements have the same number of electron shells. They have similar chemical and physical properties (Periodic Law). |
Family | In chemistry, a group (also known as a family) is a column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements. There are 18 numbered groups in the periodic table, but the f-block columns (between groups 2 and 3) are not numbered. |
Valence Electron | An electron that is associated with an atom, and that can participate in the formation of a chemical bond. |
Electron Shells | The outside part of an atom around the atomic nucleus. It is a group of atomic orbitals with the same value of the principal quantum number n. Electron shells have one or more electron subshells, or sub levels. |
Element | Each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter. Each element is distinguished by its atomic number. |
Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place on the periodic table. |
