| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Astronomy | The branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. |
| Big bang theory | A theory that the universe originated billions of years ago in an explosion from a single point of nearly infinite energy density. |
| Doppler shift | A change in frequency due to the Doppler effect. |
| Red shift | The displacement of spectral lines toward longer wavelengths. |
| Frequency | The rate at which something occurs or is repeated over a particular period of time or in a given sample. |
| Wavelength | The distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave. |
| Absolute brightness | The total amount of light produced by a star irrespective of it's distance from an observer. |
| Apparent brightness | The brightness of a star as measured by an observer, as opposed to it's intrinsic brightness when corrected for distance or absorption. |
| CMB | Is the thermal radiation left over from the time of recombination in Big Bang cosmology. |
| Universe | All existing matter and space considered as a whole. |
| Galaxy | A system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction. |
| Star | A fixed luminous point in the night sky that is a large, remote incandescent body like the sun. |
| Planet | A celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. |
| Corona | The rarefied gaseous envelope of the sun and other stars. |
| Prominence | The state of being important of famous |
| Light year | A unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in one year which is nearly 6 trillion miles. |
| Nebular | Of, relating to, a nebula or nebulae |
| Red giant | A very large star of high luminosity and low surface temperature. |
| Nova | A star showing a sudden large increase in brightness and then slowly returning to it's original state over a few months. |
| Cosmology | The science of the origin and development of the universe |
