Science Study Guide
| Atmosphere | Mixture of gases that surround a planet |
| Air pressure | The force with which air molecules push on the surface |
| Sea & Land breezes | During the day, wind blows from the ocean toward land and at night the wind blows from the land toward the ocean. |
| Mountain & Valley breezes | During the day, wind blows from the valley up the mountain slope and at night the wind blows from the mountaintop down into the valley. |
| Convection | The transfer of energy in a circular pattern due to warm air rising and cool air sinking. |
| Radiation | Energy from the sun |
| Global warming | Gradual increase in global temperature |
| Conduction | Transfer of heat energy through material |
| Greenhouse effect | Warming of the Earth’s atmosphere due to gases |
| Ozone layer | Found in the stratosphere, this layers protects Earth by trapping ultraviolet radiation from the sun. |
| List the layers of the atmosphere starting at the surface of Earth. | Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Thermosphere |
| Describe what happens to the temperature in each layer. | Troposphere = Temperature decreases Stratosphere = Temperature increases Mesosphere = Temperature decreases Thermosphere = Temperature increases |
| Describe a mountain and valley breeze. | Warm air rises up the slope during the day and cold air sinks down the slope at night. |
| Describe an example of conduction in the real world? | Touching the handle of your car after it being in the sun all day |
