Ecology

QuestionAnswer
Ecosystem All the interactions and relationships of organisms with one another and with their physical environment within a certain area.
Omnivore a consumer that eats both plants and animals
Pyramid of Energy A pyramid shaped diagram of energy flow in a food chain.
Carbon Cycle the movement of carbon atoms through an ecosystem between living organisms as well as the nonliving parts.
Predator The organism that does the killing for food.
Scavenger a carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead organisms
Biosphere the part of the Earth where all living things are
Decomposer Organisms such as fungi and bacteria that break down the complex chemical compounds made by living things into simple nutrients that are used by food producers.
Herbivore consumer that eats only plants
Producer organisms, such as plants and algae, which through the process of photosynthesis create energy rich sugar.
Water Cycle the continuous process by which water moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back
Carnivore a consumer that eats only animals
Consumer an organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Abiotic factors nonliving factors in an environment such as rocks, soil, water, and air
Biotic factors living factors in an environment such as plants and animals
Limiting Factor an environmental factor that causes a population to decrease
Carrying Capacity largest population that an area can support
Space often determines the amount of food and water or light that the organism needs
Weather involves temperature and rainfall
Direct Observation trying to count all the objects present
Indirect Observation looking for evidence of the organisms
Sampling Estimating by counting organisms in a small area and then multiplying to find it in a larger area
Population a group of organisms of the same species living in the same ecosystem.
Community living part of the ecosystem.
Ecology the study of the relationships and interactions of living things with one another and their physical environment
Mark-and-Recapture capture in an area, mark in a way that does not hurt them, release them, then count ones without marks
Birth Rate the number of births in a population in a certain amount of time
Death Rate the number of deaths in a population in a certain amount of time
Immigration moving into a population
emigration leaving a population
food chain energy links between different organisms in an ecosystem based on feeding habits
food web interconnected food chains in an ecosystem
adaptations a behavior or physical characteristic that allows an organism to live succsessfully in its environment.
tertiary consumer an organism that eats a secondary consumer
commensalism a relationship between two species in which one species benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed.
competition the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource
habitat the place in which an organism lives
host the organism that a parasite lives on or in a parasitism interaction
mutualism a relationship between two species in which both species benefit
natural selection a process by which characteristics that make an individual better suited to its environment become more common in a species
niche the special role of an organism in its community or environment
nutrient a simple chemical compound used to nourish living things ;the usable part of food.
organism a living thing
parasite an organism that benefits by living on or in a host in a parasitism interaction
parasitism a relationship in which one organism lives on or in a host and harms it
photosynthesis a chemical reaction in which carbon dioxide and water are combined inside the leaf in the presence of sunlight to form energy rich sugar
species very similar organisms that can produce fertile offspring
population density the number of individuals in a specific area
primary consumer an organism that eats producers
secondary consumer an organism that eats primary consumers
prey an organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
symbiosis a close relationship between species that benefits atleast one of the species
primary consumer an organism that eats producers
secondary consumer
