Soil Questions

QuestionAnswer
Which materials make up soil? Weathered rock and organic material. The organic material is called humus. Also, contains air, water, and a variety of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. There are three main points sand, clay, and silt.
What is the scientific name for soil layers? Soil Horizons
What are the names and characteristics of the 3 main soil layers? Topsoil-Horizon A-consist of insoluble minerals and humus Subsoil-Horizon B-soluble minerals and clay Bedrock-Horizon C-large rock fragments and rests on solid rock
How does soil form? Begins with weathering which creates sediment. The original soil- forming , parent material, determines types of minerals present.
Why is soil important? For survival of plans, habitats for animals, it's a part of the water cycle, and can be used for energy.
What can we do to maintain the quality of our soils? Crop rotation, careful with fertilizer, and reduce pollution.
