Winds Review

Local and global winds

TermDefinition
wind The horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure.
anemometer Instrument used to measure wind speed.
local winds Winds that blow over short distances.
global winds Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances.
sea breeze The flow of cooler air from over an ocean or lake toward land.
land breeze The flow of air from land to a body of water.
Coriolis effect The change that Earth's rotation causes in the motion of objects and that explains how winds curve.
latitude The distance north or south of the equator
jet stream Bands of high speed wind 10 km above Earth's surface.
Doldrums Regions near the equator with little or no wind.
Horse Latitudes Area about 30 north and 30 south latitude where air stops moving toward the poles and sinks.
Trade Winds Winds that blow west between the equator and 30 N and 30 S.
Prevailing Westerlies Winds between 30 and 60 that blow toward the poles but are curved east by the Coriolis effect.
Polar Easterlies Cold air that blows west away from the poles.
