| shadow | a dark area where opaque objects block light from reaching the ground |
| axis | the imaginary line around which a planet rotates |
| compass | an instrument for determining directions using a magnetized needle |
| night | the time between sunset and sunrise then 1/2 of the Earth is in the shadow of the Earth |
| north pole | the northernmost point on the earth |
| north star | the star that is located over the north pole, the point around which the entire northern sky turns |
| orbit | to move or travel around an object in a curved path |
| orientation | direction |
| revolution | the circular path an object takes around another object (orbit) |
| rotation | to turn on an axis |
| sun | the star at the center of the of the solar system around which all of the solar system objects orbit |
| sunrise | the time in the morning when the first part of the disk of the sun appears above the horizon in the east |
| sunset | the time in the evening when the last part of the disk of the sun disappears under the horizon in the west |
| opaque | matter that light cannot pass through |
| horizon | the line at the which the Earth's surface and the sky appear to meet |
| 23 1/2 degrees | the tilt of the Earth's axis |
| solstice | two times of the year when the Sun's direct rays strike Earth the farthest north or south of the Equator |
| equinox | the time of year when the Sun's rays strike the equator directly |
| summer solstice | the day of the year with the most hours of daylight |
| winter solstice | the day of the year with the least hours of daylight |
| autumnal equinox | Sept 21 or 22; the first day of Fall |
| vernal equinox | March 20 or 21; the first day of Spring |
| December 21 or 22 | winter solstice |
| June 20 or 21 | summer solstice |
