8th Grade Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Igneous Rock rock that forms when magma or lava cools and solidifies.
Extrusive igneous rock that forms quickly from the cooling and solidification of lava at Earth’s surface.
Intrusive igneous rock that forms slowly from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath Earth’s surface.
Felsic describes magma or igneous rock that is rich in feldspars and silica, and is generally light in color.
Mafic describes magma or igneous rock that is rich in magnesium and iron, and is generally dark in color.
Basalt a dark, fine-grained igneous rock.
Granite a coarse-grained igneous rock, that has obvious crystals of mica, quartz, and feldspars. Usually a mix of grey or pink, white, and black.
Obsidian a glasslike volcanic rock formed by the rapid solidification of lava without crystallization.
Pumice a very light and porous volcanic rock formed when a gas-rich froth of glassy lava solidifies rapidly.
