Term | Definition |

Igneous Rock | rock that forms when magma or lava cools and solidifies. |
Extrusive | igneous rock that forms quickly from the cooling and solidification of lava at Earth’s surface. |
Intrusive | igneous rock that forms slowly from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath Earth’s surface. |
Felsic | describes magma or igneous rock that is rich in feldspars and silica, and is generally light in color. |
Mafic | describes magma or igneous rock that is rich in magnesium and iron, and is generally dark in color. |
Basalt | a dark, fine-grained igneous rock. |
Granite | a coarse-grained igneous rock, that has obvious crystals of mica, quartz, and feldspars. Usually a mix of grey or pink, white, and black. |
Obsidian | a glasslike volcanic rock formed by the rapid solidification of lava without crystallization. |
Pumice | a very light and porous volcanic rock formed when a gas-rich froth of glassy lava solidifies rapidly. |
