Chronic Heart Failure Physiology

What story might you think of for CO = Heart rate (HR) x Stroke volume (SV)? Your heart beats a certain number of times. As it beats, it pumps a certain volume of blood to your entire body. So the total amount of blood pumped in a given time is known as Cardiac Output.
What story might you think of for the Ejection Fraction EF=(LVEDV – LVESV)/(LVEDV)? The blood in the left ventricle that you start with – what blood you lose from pumping / what blood you start with gives a fraction or a percentage that is relevant to heart failure.
What is preload? This is the stretch part in the Frank Sterling Curve. It is the work the heart does to fill the ventricles during diastole.
What is afterload? This is represented as the force of contraction in the Frank Sterling Curve
Would an increased HR be a problem in a chronic heart failure patient ? Yes it is a problem because the heart tries to pump blood harder and fasterin response to low Cardiac Output but it cannot. Increasing the HR could lead to arrhythmia and other long term complications.
