| Term | Definition |

| Virus | a strand of hereditary material (DNA) surrounded by a protein coating. |
| Active viruses | when a virus enters a host cell and immediately causes the cell to make new viruses and destroys the host cell. |
| Latent viruses | when a virus enters a host cell and its hereditary material (DNA) becomes part of the host cell’s DNA. |
| Vaccines | made from weakened virus particles that can’t cause disease anymore |
| Viral diseases | difficult to treat because antibiotics are not effective against viruses |
| Bacteria | one celled organisms. |
| producers | use energy from the sun to make food |
| consumers | eat producers or other consumers |
| aerobes | use oxygen for respiration |
| anaerobes | can live without oxyge |
| flagella | a whiplike tail that helps it move |
| Endospore | some bacteria that have a capsule outside of their cell walls can survive in a dormant form for hundreds of years. |
| Archaebacteria | live in harsh environments where few other organisms can |
| Eubacteria | live in less harsh environments |
| Pathogen | an organism that causes diseases. |
