| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| crust | outermost solid layer of the Earth, the layer we live on |
| mantle | the thick, liquid layer of the Earth beneath the crust |
| outer core | the hot, liquid layer of the Earth beneath the mantle |
| inner core | the solid, hot layer of the Earth beneath the outer core; innermost layer |
| lithosphere | layer that makes up the tectonic plates of Earth which includes the crust and the upper portion of the mantle |
| asthenosphere | what the tectonic plates float on, the more liquid layer of the mantle |
| continental drift | theory that the continents drifted apart in the past and continue to do so |
| Pangaea | name for the supercontinent when all the continents were all together |
| plate tectonics | a theory that explains why Earth's features appear as they do today; Earth's lithosphere is broken up into 20 major moving plates |
| plate boundary | where two plates meet |
| fault | The break in Earth's crust where plates meet |
| transverse boundary | where plates are sliding past each other |
| fracture boundary | same as transverse boundary |
| divergent boundary | where two plates are moving away from each. |
| spreading boundary | same as divergent boundary |
| convergent boundary | where two plates are moving towards each other |
| colliding boundary | same as convergent boundary |
