Plate Tectonics Chapter 8 Vocabulary

crust outermost solid layer of the Earth, the layer we live on
mantle the thick, liquid layer of the Earth beneath the crust
outer core the hot, liquid layer of the Earth beneath the mantle
inner core the solid, hot layer of the Earth beneath the outer core; innermost layer
lithosphere layer that makes up the tectonic plates of Earth which includes the crust and the upper portion of the mantle
asthenosphere what the tectonic plates float on, the more liquid layer of the mantle
continental drift theory that the continents drifted apart in the past and continue to do so
Pangaea name for the supercontinent when all the continents were all together
plate tectonics a theory that explains why Earth's features appear as they do today; Earth's lithosphere is broken up into 20 major moving plates
plate boundary where two plates meet
fault The break in Earth's crust where plates meet
transverse boundary where plates are sliding past each other
fracture boundary same as transverse boundary
divergent boundary where two plates are moving away from each.
spreading boundary same as divergent boundary
convergent boundary where two plates are moving towards each other
colliding boundary same as convergent boundary
