Matter Vocabulary/Definitions

| Matter | Anything that has mass and occupies space |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| Mixture | A substance consisting of two or more substances mixed together |
| States of Matter | The physical forms in which a substance can exist; states include solid, liquid, and gas |
| Solid | A state of matter that has definite shape and volume |
| Liquid | A state of matter that has definite volume but an indefinite shape (takes up the shape of the container) |
| Gas | A state of matter that has no definite volume or shape |
| Physical Property | A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance |
| Chemical Property | A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances |
| Density | The amount of matter in a given space (mass divided by volume) |
| Volume | The amount of space an object takes up |
| Weight | The measure of force of gravity on an object |
| Molecule | The smallest part of a substance made from more than one atom that still has the properties of that substance |
| Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas. |
| Condensation | The process by which a gas changes into a liquid. |
| Evaporation | The process by which a liquid changes into a gas. |
| Freezing Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid. |
| Dissolve | To mix completely with another substance to form a solution |
| Melting Point | The temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid. |
