Weathering/Erosion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Weathering | The slow breakdown of rock into smaller pieces and sediment. |
| Mechanical Weathering | The break down of rock through physical means. |
| Chemical Weathering | The break down of rock due to a chemical reaction. |
| Erosion | The movement of rock and soil from one place to another. |
| Deposition | When rock, soil, and sediment get dropped in a new location. |
| chemical weathering examples | acid rain, plant acid, oxidation |
| mechanical weathering examples | ice wedging, abrasion, exfoliation, plants, animals |
| erosion examples | gravity/mass movement, water, wind, waves |
| Soil | a mixture of weathered rock, mineral fragments, water, air, and humus (decayed plants and animals) |
| Rivers | v-shaped valleys and canyons can be caused from these |
| Glaciers | frozen "rivers of ice" that can make u-shaped valleys |
| human effects on erosion | clear cutting/deforestation, construction, farming, and strip mining |
| ways to reduce erosion | planting vegetation, silt fencing, retaining walls, terracing, contour plowing, and crop rotation |
| law of superposition | states that older stuff will be found in the bottom layer of soil |
