Animal Cells

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Cell Membrane The thin layer of protein and fat that surrounds a cell. It allows some substances to pass through and blocks others.
Cytoplasm Jellylike material located outside the cell nucleus that holds the organelles.
Golgi Body Organelle that changes, processes, and packages proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates into vesicles for export from the cell.
Lysosome Vesicles where the digestion of cell nutrients takes place.
Mitochondrion This organelle converts the energy stored in glucose into a high energy molecule for use by the cell.
Nuclear Membrane The membrane that surrounds the nucleus.
Nucleus It contains mostly DNA in chromosomes and controls many of the functions of the cell by controlling protein synthesis.
Nucleolus An organelle within the nucleus the produces Ribosomal RNA. The RNA is exported into the cytoplasm and forms ribosomes.
Ribosome Small organelles composed of RNA. The synthesize protein.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum This ER is covered with ribosomes that give it a rough appearance. Rough ER transport materials, moving proteins and lipids to the Golgi body.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum This ER buds off from the rough ER. It produces lipids and proteins and moves them to the Golgi body for further processing.
Vacuole Fluid-Filled, Membrane-Surrounded Cavities inside a cell. It fills with food being digested and waste material that is on its way out of the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
