Life Science

TermDefinition
Lysosomes recycles worn out cell parts
Centrioles used for cell division
Small Vacuole holds nutrients and water; aids in digestion
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) produces and transports proteins
Ribosomes assists the ER in producing and transporting proteins
Mitochondria converts food into energy
Nucleus holds all genetic material including DNA; serves as “the brain” to the cell
Cytoplasm the fluid that holds all the organelles in place
Cell Membrane forms a boundary around the cell; allows food and water to enter and waste to exit
Chloroplast converts sunlight into food
Large Vacuole holds nutrients and water; aids in digestion
Cell Wall provides support and security for the plant
Plant cells are rectangular
Plants are immobile so they need to have a large vacuole to hold a large amount of water and a cell wall to help with protection
Plants have to make their own food therefore they must have chloroplasts
Animal cells are circular
Animals are mobile so they only need a small vacuole
Animals have the ability to heal so they need centrioles to produce new cells when existing ones are lost or damaged. They also need lysosomes to help get rid of damaged cells or cell parts
Biological objects in order from least complex to most complex Organelle -> cell -> tissue -> organ -> organ system -> multicellular organism
Multicellular and Single-celled Organisms Similarities They both have to get the job done in order to stay alive
Multicellular and Single-celled Organisms Differences Single-celled organisms are like golfers. One cell is in charge of doing all of the jobs necessary to keep the organism alive
Multicellular organisms are like a football team. Many cells do specific jobs and work together to keep the organism alive
Diffusion the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Osmosis the diffusion of water across the cell membrane
DNA material in the cell's nucleus that stores coded information about how an organism will grow and develop
Chromosome coiled structure in a cell's nucleus that carries information controlling the cell's activities
Mitosis a process in which a cell nucleus divides

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
