Rock Cycle Vocab

Rocks.

TermDefinition
Rock Cycle The continual process by which new rock forms from old rock material.
Rock Naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals and organic matter.
Deposition Sediment moved by erosion is dropped and comes to res.
Composition The chemical makeup of a rock; describes either the minerals or other materials in the rock.
Erosion Sediment removed from its source.
Texture The quality of a rock that is based on the sizes, shapes, and positions of the rock's grains.
Intrusive Igneous Rock Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earth's crust.
Extrusive Igneous Rock Rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earth's surface.
Magma hot fluid or semi fluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed by cooling.
Plutons A body of intrusive Igneous rock.
Batholiths A very large igneous intrusion extending deep in the earth's crust.
Dikes A long wall or embankment built to prevent flooding from the sea.
Sills A tabular sheet of igneous rock intruded between and parallel with the existing strata.
Lava Flow A mass of flowing or solidified Lava.
Strata The most noticeable feature of Sedimentary rock.
Organic Sedimentary Rock Accumulation and lithification of organic debris, such as leaves, roots, and other plant or animal material.
Fossiliferous Limestone Bearing or containing fossils, as rocks or strata.
Stratification A system or formation of layers, classes, or categories.
Ripple Marks A system of subparallel wavy ridges and furrows left on sand or mud by the action of water or wind, and sometimes fossilized.
Mud Cracks Sedimentary structures formed as muddy sediment dries and contracts.
Foliated Consisting of thin sheets or laminae.
